According to ABS-CBN, this is in lieu of the ongoing pressure on social media platforms to ban attempts to steer elections with fake information.

The company CEO Jack Dorsey said in the statement that they have made the choice to stop all political ads on its platform globally, further saying that political message should be earned and not bought.

Facebook also recently pledged efforts to deal with false information on its platform after a Russian propaganda existed on their platform before the 2016 U.S. presidential election which affected the outcome of the race, which was won by Donald Trump.

Facebook, however, decided not to fact-check advertisements run by politicians, which drew ire from Democratic candidates running in the 2020 elections.

As per the report, Facebook’s CEO Mark Zuckerburg defended his company’s policy, further sayin that they do not want to stifle political speech.

The ban by Twitter, on the other hand, will be enacted on November 22 (Friday). Dorsey further said that paying for ads will force targeted political messages on people with the capacity to bring significant risks to politics since it can be used to influence votes to affect the lives of millions.
