The traffic crisis within Metro Manila is worsening as commuters call for a traffic crisis. Travel times used to be around an hour, but now it has doubled.

However, Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo stands by his word that there is no traffic crisis. He even went on a commute to work but ended up going on a 4-hour trip.

Based on data gathered by the navigation app “Waze” posted by Bloomberg, travel time increased. This was because of the influx of cars as the “Ber months” came in.

Based on a report from ABS-CBN, traveling in Metro Manila was 3.8 minutes/kilometer back in April of 2019. However, in September it increased to 4.9 minutes/kilometer.

As per the report, the travel conditions in Metro Manila beat out that of Bogota, Colombia and Jakarta, Indonesia. This primes Manila to take the top spot again as the Worst City to Drive In.

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) attributed the worsening traffic to the increase of cars. Last year, there were 2.8 million cars on the road per day.

Reports say that in EDSA alone, the number of vehicles on the road is double its capacity. The government has yet to issue a response to the data posted by Waze.

To help out with the traffic problem this Christmas Season, malls in Manila will be open at 11 AM starting from Nov. 11 to Jan. 10. Weekday sales are also prohibited.

Along with this, the MMDA is continuing its clearing operations. The road reblocking in EDSA and C5 are also suspended.
