Here is the summary of the legend:

In old times there is a kingdom in the East of East Java ruled by a wise king. He had a son named Raden Banterang who has a penchant of hunting.

One day, he was accompanied by his companions to go to the woods. When Banterang walked alone, he saw a deer and chased after it, leaving his companions behind.

He lost track of the deer and came cross a clear river water. There, he saw a beautiful girl named Surati from the Klungkung kingdom. Surati’s father died from defending the royal crown. Banterang took her to the palace and eventually married her.

One day, Surati was called by a man dressed in rags, who was her brother Rupkasa. He told her to avenge their father , whom he revealed was killed by Banterang. Surati refused.

Rupkasa gave her the headband and instructed her to put it inside Surati’s bed.

One day, when Banterang was hunting in the forest. A man dressed in rags approached him and said that Surati will kill him with the headband.

Banterang returned to the palace and saw the headband in Surati’s room. He initially wanted to harm his wife in a river. However Surati said that if the river water became clear and fragrant, then she is innocent and cloudy and foul if she is guilty.

Surati then jumped into the river and disappeared. Not long after, fragrant smell spread all over the river and the waters bcame clear.

Banterang lamented Surati’s death and regretted it. The river was then called Banyuwangi (Banyu is Indonesian for water and Wangi is Indonesian for fragrant), which the city is named after.
