Here is a comparison between pink Himalayan salt and sea salt

Some health enthusiasts may say that pink Himalayan salt is much better than sea salt while others may say there’s no difference but here is what experts say about this comparison.

Things you should know about sea salt

Through the evaporation of ocean water or saltwater lakes, sea salt is produced naturally, unlike the table salt which is mined from the ground and processed to filter out excess minerals and include anti-clumping additives.

According to Reader’s Digest, “the evaporation process enables sea salt to preserve traces of minerals that our bodies need, such as potassium, calcium, and magnesium.”

In addition, sea salt may also be more effective in lowering blood pressure and protecting kidney function compared to table salt.

Dr. Candice Seti warns against rushing to celebrate sea salt though it can be tagged as “natural” and “unprocessed”.

“If it is darker in hue, it has more impurities, and with the rampant pollution in our world’s waters, sea salt can contain trace amounts of heavy metals,” Dr. Seti said.

Carolyn Dean, MD, ND, bestselling author and Health and Wellness Thought Leader and Founder of RNA Reset also said that sea salt may contain “traces of “microplastics from polluted waters and plastic waste.”

Sea salt is more natural than table salt but there’s possibility that you might consume small amounts of undesired materials once you mix it with your food.

Things you should know about pink Himalayan salt

Pink Himalayan salt “comes from the Khewra Salt Mine in Pakistan, where the mineral content there produces a unique pink coloration,” Dr. William Li, author of Eat To Beat Disease: The New Science of How Your Body Can Heal Itself explained.

Producers of this salt argue that it is even more natural than sea salt because it is hand-mined and ground, without the use of metal instruments to contaminate its composition.

Based on RD’s article, “sea salt contains bits of 72 particles, pink Himalayan salt has “all 84 essential trace elements required by your body,” according to Dr. Carolyn Dean.

Which is more beneficial to your health?

Dr. Seti said, “generally speaking, the fewer additives and anti-caking agents you ingest, the better you’ll be.”

Initially, the microplastics, metals, and fewer helpful elements in sea salt might persuade you to choose the pink Himalayan salt. However, the harmful materials in sea salt is so small that it has insignificant impact to your health.

The benefits of pink Himalayan salt outweigh the sea salt but Dr. Li said that “the trace minerals that give unique taste or coloration are present in too minute a quantity to have any proven health impact.” He also said that too much any salt “can lead to high blood pressure, cellular disruption, and even strip the lining of the stomach to increase the risk of stomach cancer.”

In choosing between pink Himalayan salt and sea salt, follow your heart. “Salt, chemically known as sodium chloride, regardless of its source is vital for health. Salt helps our body regulate blood pressure, assist in nerve function, and helps your cells perform their function to keep organs healthy,” according to Dr. Li.
