The Laguna Lake is the country’s largest lake of fresh water that had been heavily silted and polluted in the past. Efforts to clean up the body of water was made by residents, government officials and church leaders.

Recently, the build up of dead moss and algae have caused a foul smell to be released and nearby residents are bothered.

An aerial shot taken by GMA News shows the waters near Brgy. Bayanan, Muntinlupa City is now bright green.

Oscar Oida from 24 Oras, reported last Thursday about the olfactory nuisance that had been bothering nearby residents for nearly a month now.

Some residents believe that the foul smell is actually making them sick.

Jennifer Salvatierra claimed that the foul smell gave her stomach pains. She told GMA:

“Masakit sa tiyan, lagi ako kinakabag, tapos masama ang pakiramdam ko minsan sumasakit ang tiyan. [It’s painful for the gut. I’m always gassy, and I don’t feel well, sometimes my stomach hurts.]”

The local health office also state their observation saying that the foul odor could be from the moss build-up that has been dying in the water.

Dr. Maria Teresa Tuliao – Muntinlupa City Health Officer – explained the reason in her statement:

“Bago mag-summer, dumadami na ang algae kasi natural phenomenon naman ito. Sa sobrang tag-init, sa panahon ngayon, ito ay unti-unting namamatay. [Before summer, algae growth rises and it’s a natural phenomenon. Due to excessive heat of our current weather, these algaes gradually die.]”

She then proceeded to explain that when algae/mosses dies, they release a foul odor once they start rotting or decaying.

This is according to an article from MSN News.

To address the issue, the Laguna Lake Development Authority (LLDA) revealed that efforts to clean-up the area are going on. However, they said that they can only operate on a limited scale.

That is all there is to it, at least for now. We’ll post updates as soon as we got them.
