SENIOR CITIZEN DISCOUNT – Lawyer Romulo Macalintal said that the discount given to senior citizens can be availed even on take-out foods.

In the Philippines, among the groups of people who are entitled to discounts in riding the public transportation vehicles, in buying groceries, and in dining in restaurants are the senior citizens.

Also, this group of people who are aging above sixty(60) years old are entitled to airline discounts and as well as discounts in purchasing movie tickets.

Under the Republic Act 9257 or also known as the Expanded Senior Citizens Act of 2003, the senior citizen discount is set at 20%. The elderly are entitled to a 20% discount based on their purchases or the fees they have to pay.

Recently, a lawyer, Romulo Macalintal, asserted that the senior citizen discount is applicable even on take-out food.

Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, speaking to DZMM, Macalintal expressed that it is stated in the law that the discount can be availed by senior citizens any time and at any restaurant.

The statement of the lawyer is in response to a complaint of a senior citizen that he or she was not given a discount over purchasing small cakes.

Based on the report, with regards to the purchase of basic commodities in grocery stores, the senior citizens are entitled to a 5% discount.

According to Macalintal, the establishment which refuses to give a discount to the elderly may be penalized. Under the law, it is punishable with up to two(2) years of imprisonment and a Php 400,000.00 fine.
