Surigao del Norte Hit by Earthquake with 5.3 Magnitude

EARTHQUAKE – The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) recorded a 5.3 magnitude quake in Surigao del Norte today, April 26, 2019.

Most of the time, quakes hit with no prior signs. Recently, several places in and out of the Philippines were shaken by quakes of different magnitudes.

One of the strong quakes recorded by Phivolcs is the 7.1 magnitude quake in Davao Oriental. There were expected aftershocks due to the said quake and a tsunami advisory was released.

Previously, in April 22, Phivolcs recorded a quake in a part of Zambales. It had a magnitude of 6.1. Strong shaking were felt leaving people fearing about the so-called “Big One“.

This morning, a 4.3 magnitude quake has also rocked the Ilocos Region and, recently, another quake hit Surigao del Norte.

Based on an article on ABS-CBN, Phivolcs recorded that at 1:26 pm today, April 26, 2019, General Luna in Surigao del Norte was hit by an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.3.

According to Phivolcs, the epicenter of the quake that hit a part of Surigao del Norte was located at 71 kilometers southeast of General Luna. It was tectonic in origin and had a depth of 9 kilometers.

Phivolcs recorded that Intensity II was felt in Gingoog City while Surigao City felt Intensity I.

Based on the report, Phivolcs noted that aftershocks may be expected from the said quake that hit Surigao del Norte.
