Phivolcs Establish First Ever Philippine Volcano Monitoring Station

The volcanology agency Phivolcs has established the first ever Philippine Volcano monitoring station was set near Taal in Tanauan City, Batangas.

The first borehole seismic monitoring station in the country has been established by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) near Taal Volcano.

Solidum said that the seismic monitoring station is using solar-powered state-of-the-art borehole broadband seismometer that could monitor small or large volcanoes.

“Taal Volcano is considered a small volcano yet, it is one of the most active volcanoes which could erupt anew. We cannot discount the possibility it will erupt again, although we may no longer be around that happens, but we need to prepare and to monitor,”  Solidum said

The VTTA or Tanauan Observation Station was build aiming to monitor irregularities and earthquakes beneath Taal Volcano.
