Senator Kiko Pangilinan Reacts on Rappler CEO Maria Ressa Arrest

Senator Francis Pangilinan finally reacts on the unexpected arrest of Rappler CEO Maria Ressa over cyber libel case filed by Justice Department.

Yesterday (February 13, 2019), Rappler CEO and executive editor Maria Ressa has been arrested by the personnel of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI).

NBI officers in civilian clothes served the warrant of arrest for Maria Ressa at the Rappler headquarters.

President of the opposition Liberal Party Senator Francis Pangilinan is calling out the Filipino people to protest over the arrest of Maria Ressa.

Pangilinan describes Ressa’s arrest as a case of harassment of another critic of the current administration.

The lawmaker also urged the authorities to stand for truth, justice, and allow the freedom of expression.

“Hindi kami papayag, at hindi nag-iisa si Maria. Kailangan nating gumuhit at sabihing nasa panig tayo ng katotohanan at katarungan. Nasa panig tayo ng malayang pamamahayag. Nasa panig tayo ni Maria Ressa,” Pangilinan said.

The opposition leader also described the Rappler CEO as a beacon of speaking truth to power and compared her arrest to the detention of their fellow LP member Leila De Lima.
