Dry Spell To Hit Luzon Due To Developing El Niño, PAGASA Says

The state weather bureau PAGASA warned the public that a dry spell was expected to hit Luzon due to the developing El Niño.

On Thursday (January 31, 20192), the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said that dry spell may hit Luzon during the first quarter of 2019.

PAGASA’s climate monitoring and prediction section chief Ana Liza Solis explained that Luzon could suffer prolonged dry spell.

Solis said that El Niño-like conditions in the Pacific causes dry spells over Lanao del Sur, Lanao del Norte and Ilocos Norte in the past.

The PAGASA chief also said that the country might experience below normal rainfall until mid-summer.

Luzon may experience prolonged dry spell. Although we expect local thunderstorms by end of March or end of April, rains from this system would not be enough (to fill water reservoirs),” Solis said.

The weather agency executive said that there is an 80 percent chance of El Niño development during the cold months of January and February accompanied with cooler and dry air from China and Siberia.
