 More Filipino Families Consider Themselves “Poor”, According to SWS Survey

The Social Weather station (SWS) survey results show that the numbers of Filipino families considering themselves “poor” increased.

On Wednesday (October 10, 2018), SWS released the survey results for the third quarter of 2018 showing the rate of families calling themselves poor has increased to 52 percent.

The nationwide survey has been conducted last September 15-23, 2018 with 1,200 participants from different parts of the country.

The survey is the second consecutive rise in self-rated poverty this year with an increase of 10 points in total.

Luzon and Mindanao have the sharp increases but Metro Manila experienced a sharp decrease, while the Visayas remains unchanged.

8 percent of the participants are considered as “newly poor” and 6 percent of the respondents are claiming that they are non-poor more than five years ago.

Meanwhile, the remaining 39 percent of the survey respondents claim that they are always poor ever since.

SWS said also showed the amount on self-rated poverty thresholds and gaps:

  • ₱15,000 – Metro Manila
  • ₱15,000 – Rest of Luzon
  • ₱10,000 – Visayas
  • ₱10,000 – Mindanao

  • ₱5,000 – Metro Manila
  • ₱6,000 – Rest of Luzon
  • ₱5,000 – Visayas
  • ₱5,000 – Mindanao
