Dead Female Hawksbill Sea Turtle w/ Metal Tags & Tracking Device Found In Negros Occidental

A dead Hawksbill Sea Turtle with a tracking device and Taiwanese metal tags has been found the town of Cauayan in Negros Occidental.

On Tuesday morning (June 26, 2018), a female sea turtle trapped inside the squid cage or ‘bubo’ has been found by a fisherman in Sitio Matab-ang, according to Mavee Ponciano, forest technician II of the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (Cenro)–Kabankalan.

Cenro-Kabankalan Kabankalan team immediately responded to check the marine animal after receiving the reports from the Municipality of Cauayan.

The female Hawksbill Sea Turtle is 83 centimeters in length, 15 kilograms in weight, and has a width of 47 cm.

Two metal or Inconel tags with serial numbers TW5153 and TW5151 were found hind flippers of the turtle while the tracking device containing its contact number and email address was attached on its carapace.

“Through the serial numbers on the tags, particularly the TW initials, we were able to identify that the sea turtle came from Taiwan,” Ponciano said.

There is no indication that the marine creature was mistreated and no injuries are found on its body.

Dave Albao, executive director of Philippine Reef and Rainforest Conservation Foundation Inc. said that the Hawksbill Sea Turtle are critically endangered species.
