Pinoy Chess Master Eugene Torre To Play Former World Champion Anatoly Karpov In Spain

The Filipino chess master Eugene Torre was set to play against the Russian former world champion Anatoly Karpov in Spain.

Eugenio Torre will play on the sixth Vila de Platja D’ Aro International Chess Festival Battle of Legends against the most popular grand chess masters.

The 66-year-old Pinoy chess master will play against the ex-world champion Anatoly Karpov of Russia, former world title contender Ljubomir Ljubojevic of Yugoslavia, and 4-time world seniors titlist Anatoly Vaisser of France.

Torre will try to repeat his victory over Karpov on the same 4-man tournament, which was held in Manila, the Philippines on 1976.

The veteran chess player also expressed his excitement to play with Karpov again on the upcoming chess festival battle.

“I’m excited to play against Karpov again. I’m ready for the challenge. This field is very competitive,” Torre said quoted by ABS-CBN.

The battle of the chess legends happens 42 years after Torre first defeated Karpov, who became a world champion in 1975.

Ljubojevic was best known for topping the board 9 times in representing Yugoslavia in 12 straight Olympiads.

Vaisser has been the world seniors champion in 2010, 2013, 2014 and 2016 and has been also tagged as the slight favorite.
