About 10% Of 700, 000 Filipinos Are  At Risk Due To Anti-Dengue Vaccine Dengvaxia

About 10 percent of more than 700, 000 Filipino people are now at risk because of the anti-dengue vaccine injected to people who did not previously infected with the virus.

Sanofi, the manufacturer of the anti-dengue vaccine Dengvaxia said that the vaccine is only effective to the people who have a prior infection caused by the deadly virus.

The manufacturer also explained that the vaccine should not be injected to the people who did not previously infected by the virus because they could suffer severe diseases.

Anti-Dengue Vaccine

The anti-dengue vaccine Dengvaxia was first approved in the Philippines.

The Department of Health (DOH) has already used the anti-dengue vaccine Dengvaxia on their vaccination program using the P3.8 billion allocated by the former Aquino administration, which was continued by Health Secretary Paulyn Ubial.

Health Secretary Francisco Duque halted the vaccination after Sanofi issued their statement. The health department was also waiting for the recommendation of the World Health Organization (WHO), which is expected to come out by the second week of December.

Duque said about 733, 713 children from Central Luzon, including the region of Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, and Quezon, and Metro Manila were administered Dengvaxia. Eight to 10 percent or over 70, 000 children have not had dengue yet, according to DOH.

The WHO approved the anti-dengue vaccine before it was implemented by the health department.

The implementation of Dengvaxia vaccination in the Philippines was also based upon the recommendation of WHO, according to former health secretary Garin.

Garin also said that WHO also allowed other countries to use the vaccine against the deadly dengue virus.
