Participation Of Sereno’s Lawyer On Impeachment Proceedings Rejected By House Committee

The House committee has rejected the participation of Chief Justice Maria Lourdes, Sereno’s lawyer on the impeachment proceedings.

On Wednesday (November 22, 2017), the House committee has voted 30-4 not in favor of Chief Justice Maria Lourdes to cross-examine witnesses against Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno.

Sereno had already requested the members of the House Panel to allow her lawyers to join the committee hearing through interrogating the resource persons.

Albay Rep. Edcel Lagman has questioned the rule that only members of the House committee were allowed to vote during the impeachment hearings.

However, Majority Leader Rodolfo Fariñas explained that the deliberations will never end if all 293 congressmen including non-members of the justice panel would participate in the proceedings.

“You can attend, you can listen to all the discussions here so that you will be already enlightened when you vote in plenary. But for you to invoke that you can participate and debate and even interject your opinions during a constitutional process that will be a dangerous procedure,” Fariñas told Lagman quoted by ABS-CBN.

Over 30 lawmakers have rejected, while only four lawmakers have voted the participation of Sereno’s lawyers in the hearing including Dinagat Representative Kaka Bag-ao, Quezon City 6th District Jose Christopher Belmonte, Siquijor Representative Ramon Rocamora, and Agusan del Norte 1st District Representative Lawrence Fortun.
