Teaching Korean Language In Public Schools Approved By DepEd, Korean Embassy

The Department of Education (DepEd) and the Korean Embassy in the Philippines have signed the agreement to teach the Korean language in public schools.

The memorandum of agreement for the Special Program in Foreign Language (SPFL) has been signed by DepEd Secretary Leonor Briones and Korean Ambassador Kim Jae Shin together with Dina Ocampo, the DepEd Undersecretary for Curriculum and Instruction and Korean Embassy First Secretary and Korean Cultural Center Director Lee Jincheol.

The agreement will allow DepEd to introduce the Korean language in public high schools. The new foreign language will be first introduced to 10 high schools in Metro Manila this year.

The second foreign language aims to enhance the skills and abilities of the Filipino students when it comes to speaking, writing, listening, and reading in the Korean language through the help of SPFL.

“We are very happy that finally we are having this signing of the MOA. This is not a beginning. This is a continuation of very long years of fruitful relationship, including the field of education, between Korea and the Republic of the Philippines.” Said by Briones quoted by Manila Bulletin.

The Korean embassy was hoping that the Korean language will be strongly implemented in order that Filipino student will be communicative competent. SPFL will also help the Filipinos to have a better respond to opportunities whether local or international employment.

The value of educational and cultural cooperation was emphasized by the Korean ambassador to intensify the bilateral relationship between Korea and the Philippines. Ambassador Kim was also happy that their language will be introduced to the Filipino students.

Foreign language such as Spanish, Japanese (Nihongo), French, German and Chinese (Mandarin) was implemented by DepEd in 2009 through SPFL to prepare graduates to be versatile in global workspace.
