Veteran Movie Director Gil Portes Dies at 71

Gil Portes, a veteran movie director died on Wednesday, May 24, 2017, at the age of 71.

In a phone interview of Mel Chionglo (also a film director) with PEP.ph, he said that he was shocked to know the death of the award-winning director.

However, he refused to divulge details about the death of the veteran director, who was admitted to East Avenue Medical Center, in Diliman, Quezon City.

The GMA affiliated entertainment site also noted that it received a text message that Gil Portes was declared “dead on arrival.”

Gil Portes is considered as one of the best filmmakers in the country.

He is behind several award-winning films incuding: Miss X (1980), Never Ever Say Goodbye (1983), Merika (1984), Bukas… May Pangarap (1984), Andrea, Paano Ba Ang Maging Isang Ina? (1990), Minsan May Pangarap: The Guce Family Story (1995), and Mulanay (1996).

Hermano Puli (2016) and Moonlight Over Baler (2017) were among the last movies he directed.

Gil Portes graduated with a degree in Journalism at the University of Santo Tomas.

He was once a production assistant and producer-director on ABS-CBN.

He later ventured in directing. However, his career was placed on hiatus because Martial Law was declared at the time.
