Phivolcs: Magnitude 6.0 Earthquake Strikes Lanao Del Sur Today

An earthquake struck Lanao del Sur according to Phivolcs.

PHIVOLCS – According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.0 struck six kilometers west of Wao town in Lanao del Sur.

Based on a recent report in GMA News, the quake shook parts of Lanao del Sur at 5:21 in the morning today, April 12. The agency said that the quake was then followed by four aftershocks.

With a magnitude of 4.0, the strongest aftershock that followed the 5:21 ground shaking was recorded to have hit at 5:51 in the morning.

According to the news report, the earthquake was tectonic in origin and it hit at a depth of one kilometer. The agency said that destruction are expected from the earthquake.

Furthermore, the agency reported that Intensity IV was felt in the cities of Cagayan de Oro, Davao, Gingoog, and Cotabato.

Based on the news report, Phivolcs initially measured the earthquake at a 5.5 magnitude. The epicenter was recorded near Kalilangan town in the province of Bukidnon. At 5:44 in the morning, the agency released the change.

Recently, several earthquakes have hit some parts of the country. It caused alarm to the people and increased the anticipation of the ‘Big One’ which might hit the Metro Manila and the provinces near the area.

One of the recent earthquakes that have hit some parts of the country struck with a magnitude of 5.4. Based on a previous news report, the 5.4 magnitude quake hit parts of Bicol and Eastern Visayas on April 10.

Phivolcs’ bulletin announced that the quake hit at 8:43 in the morning and the epicenter was located 89 kilometers northeast of Mapanas, Northern Samar, in the Philippine Sea, at a depth of 27 kilometers below the surface.

Reportedly, Intensity I was felt in Palo Leyte and Tacloban City while Juban, Sorsogon, Catarman, and Northern Samar felt Intensity II.

According to the bulletin, there were no threats of tsunami and there were no damages caused by the quake.

The report also made mention of another previous occurrence of the earthquake when the 5.9 magnitude quake shook some areas in Luzon on Saturday afternoon, April 8.

Based on the news report, the quake was felt in Cavite, Metro Manila, Batangas, Laguna, Zambales, and Talaga, Calabarzon.

Lots of people are alarmed by the occurrences of earthquake recently. Reportedly, Phivolcs previously said that due to the irregular movements of the West Valley Fault, the ‘Big One’ might strike anytime.
