Metro Manila Struck By Magnitude 5.4 Earthquake, Followed By Numerous Aftershocks

A magnitude 5.4 earthquake hit some areas of Luzon and Metro Manila on Tuesday night (April 04, 2017), which was followed by numerous aftershocks.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) has reported that Metro Manila and some parts of Luzon were struck by an earthquake around 8:58 pm on Tuesday night with epicenter at 13.71°N, 120.83°E – 007 km N 37° W of Tingloy, Batangas.

The quake has a tectonic origin with the 3-kilometer depth of focus. Makati City and Obando, Bulacan experienced the quake at intensity IV, while Cavite, Santa Ana, Manila, Lucena City, Quezon, Dasmariñas, Gen. Trias, Mandaluyong City, and Quezon City felt an intensity III earthquake.

An intensity II earthquake was also felt by the residents of Talisay, Pasig City, and Batangas, according to Phivolcs. Some netizens confirmed that the earthquake was also felt in places including Quezon, Pampanga, Rizal, Laguna, Bataan, Bulacan, Batangas, and Metro Manila. The quake damages some churches and establishments in Batangas.

Phivolcs Director Renato Solidum said that the highest intensity reported is intensity VI in Batangas City and other areas in Luzon have lower intensities. He also said that the other areas near the epicenter were expected to report slight damages.

Phivolcs has already recorded 17 earthquakes as of 1:00 am on Wednesday morning (April 05, 2017). 2 aftershocks with epicenter at Tingloy Batangas was recorded. The first one was felt around 09:17 pm with 2.5 magnitudes, while the second one was felt around 09:26 pm with 2.6 magnitudes.

Solidum warned the residents affected by the earthquake to be still prepared for the possible upcoming aftershocks, after the earthquake. However, there is no expected damage after the quake.
