A 29-Year-Old Businesswoman Died During Cosmetic Surgery

A 29-year-old Filipina businesswoman named Shiryl Saturnino died during a cosmetic surgery at a clinic in Mandaluyong City.

On Sunday (March 26, 2017), Saturnino was declared dead around 3:21 am while undergoing a liposuction, butt, and breast surgery at a clinic. The doctors tried to revive and save the patient, but they failed to do so.

Noli and Shirley Saturnino, the parents if Shiryl requested the Chief Superintendent Romulo Sapitula of Eastern Police District (EPD) to conduct an investigation regarding the death of their beloved daughter last Sunday.

Cosmetic Surgery

“We should determine whether there is negligence during the operation and file necessary charges,” said by Sapitulan in his directive to Senior Superintendent Joaquin Alva, city police chief quoted by Philstar.

Saturnino together with a relative named Shiela Mae Anabe Deinla arrived at the Icon Clinic in Mandaluyong City around 5 pm last Saturday (March 25, 2017). She was set to undergo a liposuction, butt surgery, and breast augmentation, according to the result of the initial investigation.

The cosmetic surgery was performed by doctors Jose Jovito Mendiola and Samuel Eric Yapjuangco, which lasted until around 2:40 am on Sunday. The doctors noticed that their patient’s heart was no longer beating.

Cosmetic Surgery

The doctors attempted to revive the patient through mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, but it didn’t work. So they seek help from Makati Medical Center, but Dr. Kristel Marie del Rosario declared Saturnino was already dead around 3:21 am.

Alva said that the doctors have promised that they would fully cooperate with the police investigators on investigating the incident. Yapjuangco and Mendiola also promised to give their statement as prepared by their lawyers.

The police chief also said that they still waiting for the autopsy result before filing charges against the doctors who performed the surgery, which caused Saturnino’s death.

  1. Dalawang bagay na ang pinaghahandaan ng mga doktor na kumatay sa biktima:1)kung paano palalabasin na kasalanan ng biktima ang pagkamatay niya.2)ayusin ang p(removed)port at bumili ng plane ticket para makatakas at hindi na panagutan ang krimen!

  2. This poor soul tried so hard to intervene with God’s master plan but apparently failed to succeed and succumbed to death. I’m sorry for the doctors involved and even the rest of the staff that were there during those procedures as they will be held liable for gross negligence and will likely face a malpractice lawsuit. They will run the risk of loosing their license as well. They have to prove that there were no deviations in the standard of care. The consent signed by the patient for the procedure does will not prohibit these healthcare professionals to be sued and undergo trial in the court of law.

  3. So sad. But how come that this clinic performs such invasive procedures without even an ambu bag, monitor, crash carts for emergencies like this? Seriously they have to do mouth to mouth resuscitation.
