UNESCO: Tsunami Alert Center In South China Sea To Go On Trial In 2017

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) said that tsunami alert center in the South China Sea to go on trial in 2017.

Intergovernmental Coordination Group of the Pacific Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System (ICG/PTWS) together with the work team from South China Sea region held a meeting in Shanghai to discuss some important matters.

ICG/PTWS is a body of UNESCO’S Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission. The meeting in Shanghai was conducted in order to discuss the possible tsunami alerts in the region due to the unexpected earthquake and other catastrophic events.

The discussion was about preventive measures to avoid further damaged properties in the area and even losing thousands of people’s lives, because of natural disasters.

The meeting also discussed the 27th ICG/PTWS session which was scheduled this year. It was suggested to approve the testing of the tsunami alert center before the end of 2017. Another two Pacific Ocean and new warning center were also called for a collaboration.

“Issuing tsunami alerts to the international community is an important move for China to boost regional marine cooperation and participate in global ocean governance,” said by Yu Fujiang with the National Marine Environmental Forecasting Center quoted by Manila Bulletin.

The data for monitoring networks for earthquakes and tsunamis in the south China Sea region will be improved for the better, as it was discussed during the meeting.

The U.S National Weather Service, Japan Meteorology Agency, and UNESCO Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission’s representatives have attended the meeting.

Their effort might be a preparation for the upcoming natural disasters in preventing further damage in the region. Hoping that through the modern technology and good preparations the risk of casualties and injuries will be reduced.
