Zamboanga’s Magnitude 6 Earthquake Injures at Least 3 People

Local officials in Zamboanga confirmed to the media that based on preliminary reports from various government agencies in the province, the magnitude 6 earthquake that hits Zamboanga injured at least 3 people and collpased the walls of three houses in the areas hit by the tremor.

According to the officials of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) headed by Renato Solidum, the early Thursday earthquake was centered under the sea northwest of Zamboanga del Norte province. The quake wasn’t strong enough to trigger a tsunami, he says.

Based upon the advisory issued by the agency, magnitude 6 quake was felt at Intensity 5 in Zamboanga City; Intensity 4 in Baliguian, Gutalac, Ipil, Labason, Siocon, Sibuco, and Titay, Zamboanga Del Norte; and Isabela City, Basilan; Intensity 3 in Sirawai and Liloy, Zamboanga Del Norte and Intensity 2 in Dipolog City; Oroquieta City, Misamis Occidental.

The Zamboanga earthquak occured at around 2:21 AM, on Thursday, April 14, 2016, had a depth of 16 kilometers and was tectonic in origin according to Phivolcs investigations.

Zamboanga City Police Superintendednt Luisito Magnaye confirmed to the media that the magnitude 6 earthquake caused the walls of three housest to collapse in a village in Zamboanga City, injuring at least three people, who were taken to a hospital immediately after the incident.

The city government immediately advised residents in the coastal areas to be wary of possible aftershocks and to stay alert.
