Presidential candidate and considered as one of the most popular city mayors in the Philippines, Mayor Rodrigo Duterte stated that “Let (Sen. Juan Ponce) Enrile unravel the truth,” when asked about the many questions remained unanswered about the deadly Mamasapano clash in Maguindanao.
The Mamasapano incident claimed the lives of 44 Special Action Force (SAF) commandos, 17 Moro Islamic Liberation Front rebels and five civilians last Januar7 25, 2015. The botched Mamasapano operation which successfully captured international terrorist but also considered as a failure for the government itself.
Mayor Duterte said “We have to arrive at the truth because, until now, all the results of those investigations remain convoluted.” The Davao City Mayor also admitted that he was in Zamboanga City, a day after the Mamasapano clash on Jan. 25, 2015, to campaign for federalism.
During Mayor Duterte’s visit to Zamboanga, was invited by then Interior and Local Government Secretary Mar Roxas to sit inside a command conference but he noted that he did not know anything about what happened to that fateful day.
Mayor Duterte was quoted as saying “Unfortunately, di ko na alam ang nangyari (I really do not know what happened). Roxas was there all the time, but why he did not know, it is up for Enrile to unravel,” Duterte said.
“Kung walang lalabas na totoo, let Enrile investigate what he wants to discover. Ang military pati ang pulis, malapit kay Enrile, historically,” Duterte said, but he refused to talk about what transpired inside the command conference, saying that everything inside was confidential and “it will stay that way.” Mayor Duterte stated.
