185 Party-List Approved by the COMELEC for the 2016 National Elections

A total of 185 party-list groups were given the go-signal to take part in the highly anticipated May 2015 national elections by the Commission on Elections (Comelec). Based upon Comelec Resolution No. 10025 dated December 3, 2015 the poll body noted that placing of the 185 ballots would be determined in a raffle set on December 14, 2015.

The Comelec revealed that the party-list groups include 84 organizations whose requests to be allowed to join the elections are being reviewed by the full Comelec after being rejected by the poll body’s First and Second Division.

The poll body revealed that a total of 243 party-list groups filed for inclusion in the list or Manifestations of Intent to Participate in the 2016 national elections.

Comelec decided to adopt a new setup in the 2016 elections for Party-List representatives, by placing the party-list groups in the ballots to determine their order which is contrary to the previous elections wherein party-list names were listed in alphabetical order.

Before the start of the 2016 elections, Comelec received numerous complaints that some groups with names prefixed with No. 1 or letter A enjoy undue advantage as voters hardly go through the entire list of candidates.
