Pres. Aquino’s Uncle Tarlac Rep Enrique Cojuangco Dies at 74

Tarlac Rep. Enrique Cojuangco died Tuesday morning at the age of 74 due to aneurysm.

President Benigno S. Aquino III, accompanied by SMC president and chief executive officer Ramon Ang, Tarlac 1st District Representative Enrique Cojuangco and Public Works and Highways Secretary Rogelio Singson, leads the inaugural drive-through to formally open the Tarlac City-Gerona-Paniqui Section of the Tarlac-Pangasinan-La union Expressway (TPLEX) Project at the Paniqui Toll Plaza in Barangay Guiteb, Ramos, Tarlac on Monday (December 23, 2013). At present, diversified conglomerate San Miguel Corporation (SMC) through its subsidiary and TPLEX concessionaire- Private Infra Dev Corporation, Inc. (PIDC) is working on the 27-kilometer stretch from Paniqui to Moncada in Tarlac then Carmen in Pangasinan including the construction of the 950-meter Agno viaduct. From end-to-end, the 88.85-kilometer TPLEX will traverse 17 towns and two cities in the provinces of Tarlac, Pangasinan, La Union and Nueva Ecija. House Majority Leader Neptali Gonzales II confirmed Conjuanco’s death and pointed out the caused based on the initial information they received.

Cojuangco was the leader of the Nationalista Peoples’ Coalition in the House of Representatives and was on his second term in congress.

House Speaker Sonny Belmonte said to reporters that Cojuangco experienced stomach pains the earlier morning and died on the way to hospital.

Cojuangco was the first cousin of the late former President Cory Aquino, an uncle of PNoy.

Cojuangco pushed in congress the legislation of House Bill 5286 or the proposed Philippine Competition Law seeking to abolish unfair trade practices and monopolies.

The law maker’s wake is expected at Mt. Carmel in Quezon City.
