BIR Chief Kim Henares Urged Taxpayers to Visit Internet Cafes for Income Tax Filing

Commissioner Kim Henares of the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) urged taxpayers to go to internet cafes for income tax filing after recent reports that there’s a compatibility issues with the controversial BIR Electronic Forms (eBIRForms) system which will facilitate the bureau’s transition to a paperless tax system in the Philippines.

As the April 25 deadline for income tax filings draws near, the BIR insists on using the Electronic BIR Forms but due pressure by various taxpayers, the agency issued Memorandum Circular No. 18-2015, which deferred the filing of “No Payment” income tax returns to on or before June 15, 2015.

However, among other stringent requirements, the eBIRForms program can only be run on computer running Windows Vista, Windows 7, or higher. According to some computer experts, the other operating systems, particularly the older Windows XP or rival Mac OS are unsupported.

According to Commissioner Kim Henares in an exclusive live interview on Unang Balita, she brushed off compatibility complaints, saying that the majority of computers run Windows anyway.

She was quoted as saying “Pumunta na lang siguro sila sa Internet cafe. Kasi ang karamihan (ng tao) ay may Windows,” she said.
