The men’s basketball team of the Philippines more popularly known as the Gilas Pilipinas squad is considered as one of the title contender in the Asian Games after their recent showing in the 2014 FIBA World Cup in Spain, as they stunned the world with their superb basketball skills against powerhouse teams from Europe, America and Africa.
The Philippines won their first of the country’s four straight Asian Games gold medals in 1951, since then, the country only managed one silver and two bronzes, the country’s last medal was way back in the year 1998.

The two biggest threat of the Philippines campaign are powerhouse teams Iran, South Korea, and China. The Iranian national basketball squad was ranked 20th by FIBA, while China was at 14th and South Korea is currently ranked at 27th while the Philippines is at 31st.
A total of 16 teams qualified to the Asian Games Men’s Basketball competition while a total of 11 teams were competing in the Women’s tournament of the Asian Games’ basketball event.
According to the organizers of the Asian Games, a total of eight teams were seeded straight through the 12-nation group stage which begins on September 23, 2014. The eight teams are China, South Korea, Iran, Japan, Qatar, Philippines, Jordan and Taiwan.
Meanwhile the eight unseeded nations were Mongolia, Saudi Arabia, Kazakhstan, Hong Kong, Kuwait, Palestine, India and the Maldives who competed in the qualifying round of the Asian Games Men’s Basketball tournament.
