Jakarta Gov. Joko Widodo Wins Indonesia’s Presidential Election

The former governor of Jakarta, Indonesia, Gov. Joko Widodo, was declared as the winner of Indonesia’s Presidential election on Tuesday, July 22, 2014. According to Gov. Widodo his victory is “a victory for all the nation’s people.”

The newly-elected President of Indonesia is often better known by his nickname “Jokowi,” he is supposed to served as Governor of Jakarta until the year 2017.

The Indonesian Democratic – Struggle (PDI-P) party-member, Jokowi Widodo, captured the hearts and minds of millions of Indonesians with his common man image in the world’s largest archipelago.

Incoming Indonesian President Jokowi Widodo is a former furniture exporter is considered as the first Indonesian Presidential candidate in a direct election with no ties to the former dictator of Indonesia, former President Suharto who ruled Indonesia for 30 years under dictatorship.

Gov. Jokowi Widodo received a total of 53 percent of the vote, as announced by the Election Commission on national TV. The other contender of the July 9, 2014 Presidential election is the former General Prabowo Subianto, who withdrew from the contest shortly before the final numbers were released, saying there was massive fraud during during the election.

The archipelago of Indonesia, the world’s largest Muslim countries and home to more than 240 million people got their newest President, a common man supported by international artists, Gov. Jokowi Widodo.
