PLDT Explains Internet Speed Problems in the Philippines From March 28 Onwards

The Philippine internet users experienced a dismal internet speed for the past few days because of the problem faced by telecom giant, Philippine Long Distance Telephone (PLDT) starting from March 28, 2014.

The country’s largest broadband Internet Service Provider (ISP), PLDT, is currently hit by a slow-down internet connection that affected many of its subscribers nationwide.

According to some reports posted by TechinAsia.com, the two internet fiber lines in the Asia Pacific Cable Network (APCN) was reportedly broken since last week.

PLDT already explained through their official Facebook Page, that “The fiber breaks are at the bottom of the seas in areas between Taiwan and Japan, as well as China and South Korea. The breakage is expected to disrupt internet connections and speeds on that fiber lines.

The PLDT Group that runs the APCN line, is currently doing the necessary repairs, it’s a bad news for internet subscribers as the repair won’t be completed until mid-April 2014.

To migitate the issue, the telco has “re-routed voice and data traffic to two other international cable systems – the Asia-America Gateway and the Asia Submarine Cable Express.” PLDT noted.

According to the records of the Philippine’s National Telecommunications Commission, during the year 2013, PLDT has 1.3 million subscribers which comprised 70 percent market share in the Philippines.

  1. Really, March 28th? The day when the Philippines files at the UN against China, and China has promised that the Philippines will pay, right? So, how exactly do you think two fiber cable cuts occur on the same day in different parts of the ocean? “The fiber breaks are at the bottom of the seas in areas between Taiwan and Japan, as well as China and South Korea. The breakage is expected to disrupt internet connections and speeds on that fiber lines.”

These were not accidental breaks. This was cyber warfare on a very crude level from China.

    • Yes, they have been slow before, but there has been a significant difference that started on March 28th.

I know this as I run a US based company from my home in the Philippines. As of the 28th, I have not been able to hold a connection to my equipment in the USA. This was not a problem before. Also, PLDT’s competitor, Globe, is also affected. I have links to both networks and in the past would disconnect from one, and move to the other, as needed, if one was slow for a while. Since the 28th, nothing works on either network.

So yes, PLDT has an oversubscribed network, based on the bandwidth need, BUT these fiber cuts are something else. I ought to know. I have been running ISP’s and installing Fiber Optic Cable (FOC) since the early 1990’s.

  3. yes, pldt should adjust the rates for customers did not get what they paid for. That way, PLDT will do their best to repair the broken table at the soonest time possible.

  4. I smell something fishy about this. As I observed, internet connection started to go slow since PLDT agents are calling for an internet upgrade. SALES before SERVICE as I look at it.

  5. Kaya pala 1 week na kami nag follow up na may pumunta dito para check net namin walang planong pumunta dahil sa kanila mismo ang may problema.

  6. The problem is back this week. Cyber conspiracy again? Coinciding with capture of 11 Chinese fisherman in the disputed Philippine-Chinese waters?

  7. Pldt: “Buy the LA Clippers OR improve our outdated internet service? Hmmmmmmmmmmm (thinking about it or at least pretending to be).”

  8. This is not acceptable. I run an Off-track telebet Station and my business depends on your internet service. Please PLDT have this problem fixed!!!
Since it’s your equipment that is causing the slow internet connection, don’t make us your valued customers suffer for it.

Or atleast give a rebate as recompense for the inconvenience you caused us.

Thanks and I sincerely hope you address this issue ASAP.

  10. Hay PLDT, give it up with your petty excuses you greedy people. 2015 na tapos mabagal pa din, mas priority nila yung pag-advertise for internet upgrade, and customer service only holds empty promises. At this rate, mawawalan kayo ng mga subscribers eh. GG sa inyo.
