Bantayan Island Suffered Heavy Damages Due to Super Typhoon Yolanda (Photos)

Bantayan Island is one of the worst-hit islands in the Philippines caused by the devastation by Super Typhoon Yolanda which landed in the northern part of Cebu at around 10:30 AM on Saturday, Nov. 8, 2013. The strongest typhoon to hit the county “cut-off” all power and communication lines in the three-municipalities comprising Bantayan Island.

The damage from the powerful typhoon is not yet unknown because of the island’s isolation, but based upon the preliminary reports from various local media, about 30 percent of the island’s resident lost their homes.

According to the Mayor of the Municipality of Bantayan, Mayor Chris Escario who managed to sneak in a call from Sta. Fe wharf, Bantayan looks like a war zone, he said. 90% of the houses that are still standing have no more roof. The island is currently in need of water to drink and generator sets to get their pumps running.

  2. Dear Mr. Umbao,
I am gravely concerned over a loved one who resides in Bo. Obo-ob in Bantayan Island. She has the same family name as you. Her name is Josefa Desamparado Umbao who was the Yaya of my daughter as well as her father and her father’s siblings.

She has retired in Bantayan after decades of faithful service to our family. She told me before that her house is located walking distance from the seas(removed).

If you by any chance know anything about her, we would greatly appreciate if you could e-mail me please. We want some re(removed)urance that our dear Yaya Pepang is alive.

  3. Dear Mr. Umbao,
Are you a relative of Yaya Pepang? Is Yaya safe? We are all concerned, including her alagas abroad.
Who is Kelly Gemepino? Is she a niece. The one who used to text me when Yaya Pepang wanted to relay a message to me was named Madonna.

    My cell no. IS 0917-9140010

Translation (Ok lang po siya ligtas, but mahirap yong pagkain, ang bahay need to build.”

Salamat po nakipag coordinate na po kami sa mga local officials don for other updates.

  4. Thank you very much, Mr. Umbao for the update. Please tell Yaya Pepang we will help her . Please send our love to her.

Thank God I found you on the internet.

When I was thinking of Yaya, I said to myself that no one could survive the storm surge by the sea. Thank God she relocated.

  6. Yaya Pepang is the Best Yaya – loving, loyal, dedicated, prayerful. Love begets love. She has showered us with her goodness during the many years of her stay with the Dulce Family and it is only right that we treat her with love, kindness and gratitude. Thank you so much for giving us inner peace now that we know that she and her family are safe. I hope that soon the relief goods will reach Bantayan so that there will be food and water for everyone. Do you know if Yaya is staying in a relative’s house or in an evacuation center?
