Philippines Ranked 34th in the Latest FIBA Rankings Due to FIBA Asia Success

The Philippine national men’s basketball team more popularly known as the Gilas Pilipinas ranked 34th in the latest FIBA Rankings released on Friday, September 29, 2013.

The Gilas Pilipinas moved 11 places from the previous ranking of 45th, with the success of Gilas Pilipinas garnering the Silver medal only behind Asian powerhouse Iran, the Philippines is now considered as one of the top contenders in Asia.

According to FIBA the basketball ranking worldwide are based on results from the following major basketball tournaments: the Olympics, the FIBA World Cup, and the different FIBA zone championship (Eurobasket, Africa, Americas, Asia, and Oceania).

The FIBA organization, takes results from the last two Olympic cycles, including qualifying zone championships. Based upon the latest rankings, the Philippines is the sixth-ranked nations in Asia after China (12th), Iran (20th), Lebanon (29th), Jordan (30th), and South Korea (31st).

The top three teams in the current FIBA Rankings still belongs to United States, Spain, and Argentina.
