Amnesty for Illegal OFW’s in Saudi Ends on July 3, 2013

One of the Philippines largest concentration of OFW’s, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia will end their amnesty program for illegal migrant workers. The 90-day grace period will end this coming July 3, 2013.

Filipino migrant group, Migrante Internationl stated on Monday, that there are at least 22,000 undocumented OFW’s working in Saudi Arabia which will be affected with the Saudi’s program to clean-up their expat workers.

The original 90-day grace period was meant to give the nearly 2 million ‘illegal’ migrant workers time to fix their documentation, and thereby leave the Kingdom or transfer to other sponsors as allowed by Saudi authorities.

Saudi Arabia has an estimated over one million OFW’s, although there are reports that the extension will be extended anew but the grace period remains uncertain and it depends upon the mercy of His Highness King Abdullah.

As of June 15, the DFA stated that they have repatriated a total of 414 OFW’s out of the reported 6,500 stranded in Jeddah and 3,500 in Riyadh who requested (–foul word(s) removed–)istance for repatriation.
