Eastern Indonesia Hits by 7.1 Magnitude Earthquake (April 6, 2013)

The U.S. Geological Survey has released and confirmed that a powerful 7.1 magnitude earthquake hit a remote par of eastern Indonesia on Saturday, April 6, 2013.

The tremor struck about 47 miles underground in Papua province, in the eastern part of Indonesia. It occurred in a mountainous area, about 35 miles northeast of Tolikara.

The 7.1 earthquake was felt across many parts of Papua, including the capital city, Jayapura, and the copper town of Timika and Wamema. The country is prone to seismic activities due to its location on the “Pacific Ring of Fire.” According to Indonesian Meteology Agency there’s no tsunami warning because of the location of the earthquake which is far from any body of water.
