Mason a scruffy Alabama terrier mix dog was whipped away by a fierce twister last month, prompting his owners, whose home was destroyed by the strong storm, to fear the worst.
The brave dog apparently strived to crawl back to his home days after with his two legs that is in a remarkable tail of survival.
A report from a local news outlet WBRC reported that Mason was blown away by the storm form the garage in Birmingham, the place where he is hiding on April 27. His owners searched for him everywhere but they could not find him. After two and a half weeks, though, they found Mason on their front porch waiting for them when they returned to their place to look for debris.
The workers at the Birmingham Jefferson County Animal Control shelter are taking care of Mason, since his owners say that they cannot take care of him yet because they are still recovering back the pieces they had lost after the storm.
Phil Doster, shelter worker told the news station “This is probably the most dramatic we’ve seen as far as an injury in an animal that’s survived this long. It’s kind of tapering off, the amount of animals we’re seeing because of the storm. For an animal just to show up on someone’s porch after this time was pretty remarkable, especially with the condition he’s in”.
After his May 20 surgery where metal plates were placed to his bones so they could heal he is doing good. “We are excited that he will be going back to his family and to the home where he finally returned after 3 weeks,” Doster wrote to The Lookout via email. Mason is expected to be able to walk completely and normally after he will recover in approximately six weeks, though his front legs will be slightly shorter than his legs at the back. The family of Mason requested to not be named in the media but they are very excited for Mason to come home when their home is rebuilt in about five weeks.
