After a Powerful 8.9 Magnitude Earthquake, Tsunami Swamps Japan

After a powerful 8.9 offshore quake hit the large areas of Japan from the northern Pacific coast, tsunami swamped the entire towns at around 2:20 Friday, March 11, 2011.

The tsunami reported between 6-10 meters.

Authorities have ordered the residents to move to a high ground and go away from the coast of tsunami that can strike huge waves.

The earthquake was 160-times more powerful compared the one that destroyed Christchurch last month, said the Seismologists.

The agency said, of this size of an earthquake it has a potential to generate tsunami that can destructively strike coastlines near the quake epicenter with in a minutes and more several hours within the distant coastlines.

Advisory warning to several coastlines that can be possibly affected within the circle of Pacific including the territories of Guam, Russia, Taiwan, Marshal Islands, Philippines, Indonesia, Nauru, New Guinea, Micronesia and Hawaii.

More than 11,000 Russian people have evacuated from areas that could be affected by tsunami including Sakhalin Island and Kuril Islands. Hawaii also has ordered evacuation of their people.

The earthquake was already considered one of the worst quakes in the history of Japan. The quake struck around 382 kilometers north-east of Tokyo at 24-kilometers depth, said the US Geographical Survey said.

Eight strong aftershocks including 6.8 quake about 66 kilometers on the mainland north-east of Tokyo.

Cosmo Oil refinery exploded in Chiba prefecture outside Tokyo causing dozen meters of flames into the air. The firefighter was unable to contain the inferno.
