A two month old Mediterranean monk seal was rescued by conservationist last February 7, 2011.

The monk seal was found in the south western Aegean Sea while the research team from Mom/ Hellenic Society for the study and protection are having their monitoring in a seal colony.

“The pup was very weak when the researcher fount it and researcher came out the last moment”, Alexander Karamanlidis a wildlife biologist said.

According to the researcher the monk seal was separated from its mother and it was full of parasites when it was found.

The species is the world’s most endangered seal and one of the most endangered marine mammals. In record there are only 600 of them left in the wild.

Conservationists reported that two days after they have rescued the monk seal it started to show weakness, it did not even tried to get into water and did not react to human presence. So researcher brought the monk seal to a rehabilitation center in the island of Alonissos headed by Dr. Karamanlidis.

As of now the seal monk is already gaining weight and strength. Conservationist said that if everything goes in to what is planned, the seal will be released soon in the monk seal colony in Greece.

The human activity that has tresp(–foul word(s) removed–)ed into the seal’s habitat is the reason why the seals are forced to get into caves. Researcher said. Because of this there are bigger possibilities the new born pup seals will be swept out of their caves when storm surges comes and becoming separated from their mothers.
