58 People Died After One Of The Most Powerful Earthquakes Ever Hits Mexico

On Friday (September 08, 2017-PH Time), the Mexico has been struck by one of the most powerful earthquakes ever that kills at least 58 people.

A magnitude 8.1 earthquake has struck the coastal area of Chiapas, Mexico that topples houses and buildings. It also caused people to panic and flee from the building and establishments fearing for their lives.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) said that the strong tremor, which shook the area has a depth of 33 kilometers and allegedly shut down the electricity. About 20 aftershocks have already recorded as of this writing.

Powerful Earthquakes

Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) has also raised tsunami alerts in the coastal areas of Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Panama, Honduras and Ecuador. The waves could be one meter above the tide level.

National civil defense chief Luis Felipe Puente said that the powerful tremor has taken the lives of at least 58 people, wherein 10 of them in Oaxaca, an area near the quake’s epicenter.

The strong quake caused over 1.8 million people and authorities to closed schools as hundreds of buildings collapsed and severely damage.

Powerful Earthquakes

Chiapas Gov. Manuel Velasco has also warned the residents living near the coastal areas to leave their residence as a protective measure and to avoid any casualties.

Guatemala, President Jimmy Morales told national television that residents need to calm down as the authorities were already checking for the damages.

Mexico’s National Seismological Service said that the Friday quake is one of the biggest quakes to strike the country after the magnitude 8 quake of 1985 that killed thousands of people.
