Final Day In Office Of South Korea’s President

On Friday (December 09, 2016), is the final day in office of South Korea’s President Park Geun-Hye after impeachment due to political scandal.

After a devastating political scandal triggered the parliament set to a vote to impeach Park from being the president of South Korea. Her substantial executive powers would be transferred to the prime minister if she will be impeached from the position.

Park is allowed to stay in her position while waiting for the Constitutional Courts decision whether to formally end her presidency or approved the impeachment. The South Korean president faces embarrassment for being the first democratically elected president to be dismissed from office.

The South Korean president was accused of constitutional and criminal violations for failing to protect the people’s lives from abuse of power and bribery, which triggered the impeachment motion.

The impeachment motion was filed last week with 171 signatures of independent lawmakers and all oppositions. Massive rallies and protest were conducted to pursue Park’s impeachment. On previous weeks, millions of people participated the protests at the streets of Seoul and other cities.

Park and her administration were paralyzed due to the scandal, who focused on her friendship with her best friend Choi Soon-Sil. Choi was charged for intervening in state affairs and using her connection in Blue House to convince several groups to donate an amount of $70 million to the two foundations that she manages.

Park has been tagged as a suspect by prosecutors’ probe for a high-level corruption which stained the credentials of South Korea and presidential Blue House. Every president of South Korea has faced graft case after leaving the position, since the first free and fair election in 1987.

Choi has influenced Park a lot such as from her wardrobe up to appointing her top officials. The South Korean president was also accused of leaking confidential documents to Choi.
