PCIJ: 830 Donors Contributed In 2016 Presidential Race Campaign

Lately, talks about election spending of the 2016 election candidates have sparked in social media. News headlines also entail about the Statement of Contributions and Expenditures (SOCE) submitted by the electoral bets to the Commission on Elections (COMELEC).

In fact, a previous news report entailed about the viral photo circulating in Facebook in which the contribution of Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano to Pres. Rodrigo Duterte’s campaign is being pointed out. It is compared to his net worth based in his 2015  Statement of Assets, Liabilities, and Net Worths (SALN).

Recently, a report in Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism entailed about the number of donors behind the presidential race. Based on the report, there are 830 donors behind the presidential race as to PCIJ.

It also noted that the number is ‘minute’ if compared to the total number of registered voters which is 56 million. Furthermore, the report stated that Metro Manila is the source where 80% of the total amount came from.

PCIJ pointed out that the donation ‘still came from far too few individuals’ like in the 2010 election. It also made an emphasis that most of those who donated came from Metro Manila.

Based on the report, the ‘fattest campaign coffer’ was not of Pres. Rodrigo Duterte, the former mayor of Davao City, who came out as the victor of the 2016 presidential race.

It is noted that most of Pres. Duterte’s fund came from his 13 biggest donors who contributed 89% of his P375-million campaign kitty. Furthermore, it entailed P75 million was the highest donation he got.
