The former basketball player and his runner was arrested in a buy bust operation where a sachet of prohibited drugs was confiscated.
BACOLOD CITY, Negros Occidental – Former basketball star and now barangay chairman at Barangay 35, Bacolod City in Negros Occidental Manuel “Maui” Huelar was arrested along with two others in a drug buy bust operation in a lodging house on November 28, Monday morning.
Huelar was a former member of the Negros Slashers team under the Metropolitan Basketball Association (MBA) when he was younger.
In an operation led by the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) in Negros Island Region (NIR) on Monday night, the operatives confiscated a sachet of suspected methamphetamine after Huelar positively handed it to the police poseur buyer in exchange of P500 buy bust money.
Another sachet and P1,000 was seized from the former basketball player’s possession.
Also arrested was Christian Joseph “CJ” Mijares, 20 years old and a resident of Pontevedra town in Negros Occidental, who is allegedly Huelar’s drug runner.
PDEA-NIR director Julius Navales said that Mijares is the one who middled the poseur buyer and Punong Barangay Huelar for the illegal drug transaction in a lodging house along Araneta St., Barangay Singcang, Bacolod City.
Both Mijares and Huelar denied their involvement with the illegal drug trade.
According to the former basketball star, his conscience is clear and reiterated that he is not using, selling or protecting anybody involved in the illegal drugs.
He clarified that he was in the said inn only to pawn his firearm to a friend so that he could have more money to be used as capital in a cock derby on that night.
Meanwhile, Mijares said that he has no knowledge of the operation and he was sleeping with his girlfriend in the next room and he was only awakened by the noise outside.
He added that the PDEA operatives shouted at them and ordered to open the door, otherwise, they would be shot.
Despite their denial, both Huelar and Mijares confirmed that they know each other.
