Tomb Of Jesus Christ Opened For The First Time In Centuries

After it was closed since Jesus Christ resurrected, preservation experts opened the tomb again for renovation.

JERUSALEM – The part of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre which was believed to be the tomb of Jesus Christ was opened for the first time in at least a couple of centuries.

Gali Tibbon, a photographer at AFP, witnessed the uncovering of some of the historic work and shot some photos of the site believed to contain the rock upon which Jesus was laid in around 33 AD.

The uncovering of the tomb, which started by removing the marble slab covering the site, was part of the ongoing restoration at the site. An archaeological analysis will also be conducted in the site.

Father Samuel Aghoyan, the Amenian superior of the church, said that it was the first time that the marble had been removed since at least 1810, when the last restoration work took place following a fire, and possibly earlier.

One of the sights in the area is a painting of Jesus. It was placed in the narrow area above where the marble slab was removed.
