Military-Grade Signal Jammers Placed In New Bilibid Prison

New Military-Grade Signal Jammers Installed

Military-grade signal jammers have been installed at the New Bilibid Prison on Tuesday in order to disrupt the communication of signals to prevent outside transactions in the illegal drug trade.

In a report by GMA News, these two high output power signal jammers were installed in Building 14, a place where convicted drug lords and other high-profile prisoners are detained.

The purpose of these signal jammers is to prevent the communication signals inside the said building which will  disallow drug lords from operating or having illegal transactions using their cellphone and the Internet.

According to Justice Undersecretary Reynante Orceo, the move has been done to at least, minimize or even prevent the transactions using cellphones.

The report added that the said signal jammers have an effective range of up to 20 meters away from their location, which will affect even the nearby residential area.

The newly installed signal jammers have been placed in a secured area as to prevent previous sabotage activities done by inmates and even prison guards.

“May umabot din kasi sa akin na dati tinatanggal nila ‘yung saksakan ng jammer, ng mga personnel. Na-identify naman ‘yung ibang mga gumagawa nun. Personnel ng BuCor [Bureau of Corrections],” said officer-in-charge of the BuCor, Rolando Asuncion as quoted.

In the report, it said that it has been discovered by NBI that the Bilibid 19 inmates threw salt in the signal jammers which were installed news their cells. After that, the Bilibid 19 inmates have since been transferred to the NBI Prison facility.

Also, there the previously installed signal jammers have been allegedly destroyed using electricity.

In the administration of President Rodrigo Duterte, the Philippine National Police-Special Action Force (PNP-SAF) have been deployed in Bilibid to tighten the security of the penitentiary since July.
