Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a common disease of the elderly which decreases the strength and causes a high risk of a broken bone commonly the backbone. This is a case where we can see curved back from a compression fracture of backbone, forearm bone, and the hip of a person.

Osteoporosis a Common Disease Of the Elderly

This disease causes bones to become weak and so brittle that can cause fracture from a simple fall, bending over, or even coughing. Fractured bones commonly occur in the hip, wrist or spine.

Osteoporosis may occur from many factors such as a certain number of diseases including alcoholism, anorexia, surgical removal of the ovaries and kidney disease. Some medication also increases the rate of bone loss including anti-seizure medication, chemotherapy, and steroids.

Also, smoking and lack of exercise are also a risk factor. Men and women both can be affected by the disease at the average of 50-70 yrs. of age. Women have a higher risk factor than men.

See next page for the symptoms and factors of the disease.
