Lopez Says To Mining: ‘You Can’t Earn Money By Causing Suffering’

Lopez suspended the four mining companies in Zambales for not complying the environmental safety standards. The suspension was ratified and signed by the Regional Directors of the MGB, DENR, and Environmental Management Bureau.

Known as an environmental activist Regina Paz L. Lopez took over the top post of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) from outgoing Secretary Ramon J. P. Paje.

According to a report DENR secretary Lopez suspended the four mining companies that were accused of environmental degradation, denudation of forests and lack of funds for progressive rehabilitation. The four mining companies that failed to secure the international certification on safety standard.

Lopez confirmed the Suspension to an interview that the suspension will covered all extraction of nickel ores and future expansion of mining areas. According to her, the four mining companies that were suspended are Benguet Corp Nickel Mines Inc., Zambales Diversified Metals Corp., LNL Archipelago Minerals Inc. and Eramen Minerals Inc.

MGB director Leo Jasareno confirmed that the suspension was followed of the Writ of Kalikasan issued by the Supreme Court against the four mining firms. The government regulator firms to employ continuous implementation of all environmental protection and enhancement programs for the maintenance measure of the duration suspension.

According to a report, the suspension of the four mining companies will secure safety in Zambales and to have a responsible mining in the Philippines.
