Bridge Without River In Southern Leyte

A photo of a bridge without river in Southern Leyte just went viral all over social media and gained flak of comments and conclusions pertaining the said ‘uncommon construction’.

The photo that went viral was captured in Paku, Bontoc in Southern Leyte really made rounds over Facebook. This bridge is so different from the others since there is no river below the bridge.

In a report by Bicol Today, together with other netizens who gave their comments, implied that the said project is an “evidence of graft and corruption when precious people’s money were spent on worthless project”.

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) District Engineer of Southern Leyte Ma. Margarita Junia reacted and defended the construction of the “bridge with no river” in a Facebook post.

She said that it was “built to cross a fault line, saving millions of pesos worth of road repair works and protecting lives and properties.” She added that it was made to protect an underground water source.

“It has been a common knowledge for the residents in the area and for the usual motorists passing through this section that the numerous reblocking, embankment and slope protection projects implemented in this particular section in the past have been destroyed every time continuous heavy rains occur,” Junia said.”

In Junia’s post, she confirmed that the slab bridge was actually a project of the DPWH-SLDEO built three years ago in Pako, Bontoc.

She also called on the netizens to know the facts only why the government had to go on to construct such projects instead of just making conclusions.

The said post by Junai was a response to a post by a certain Lito Quesada but, Quesada’s post was now deleted.

  1. for the sake of argument, cge it crosses a fault line..so if may earthquake and slip/strike/reverse and/or normal fault occurs, do you think this bridge would still be p(removed)able? for sure there will be horizontal or vertical translation or simply the bridge will just split in half..

    wa na lang untay railing para d halata..wala untay issue

    • sa nangangailangan ng tulay walang tulay, pero ang hindi nangangailangan ng tulay ay ginawan ng tulay. ganyan ang utak ng mga taong masama ang plano.

  2. i would say the minds of the people behind this project was already ahead of their time. Imagine, they’re like the very first people to build and thought of a bridge under a fault line in the Philippines. Not all genius architects in this country can do that.

    The bridge is still suspended to the ground. If an earthquake occurred and it happened to hit that ground the bridge would still suffer damage.

  3. I have p(removed)ed this area and I personally see this area where the said fault lies. You will see crevices in the road pavement even if the road is newly constructed on this area of Bontoc, Southern Leyte. The wide crack is caused by the fault line that traverse in this area and the underground source of water beneath the land surface. For me guys, this is the most viable solution to the problem. The people of the place are aware of this unusual geologic attribute. So please let us double check our facts before making comments.

  4. They should have constructed the road pavement using poured concrete gutter on both sides instead of concrete railings that resembles a bridge. That way it would not look like a suspiciously graft and corruption-riddled project.

  5. this is similar to an area in mangima, malaybalay, bukidnon, zigzag portion, where almost every 2 years, dpwh has to repair the cemented road 8 inches thick, but because of seepage of water underneath the cemented road, dpwh has finally decided to build a bridge, to eliminate the problem once and for all.

  6. You should had build a slab bridge with out side walks and railings. I think, as engineers, you should know when to put railings and sides walks. there’s always an exemption.

  7. a bridge project cost a lot more than a road. the budget is for a bridge but only a road is made. more money to the pockets of the corrupt.

  8. DPWH ACCORDING TO ONE OF THE CONTRACTOR,THEY GIVE 10%FOR WHATEVER THE PRICE OF THE CONTRACT,FROM THE TOP OFFICIAL DOWN TO THE LOWEST.SO THE PROJECT ENDS UP SHORT OF MATERIALS FOR THE CONTRACTOR.This another problem that the incoming Administration to look into.

  9. This bridge been there for 3 years na daw so ibig sabihin it works. Its a good project and they save monies for always repairing it. Kung tungkol naman sa involve na corruption i think yung mga tao duon ang makakapagsabi tungkol dyan. but the most important is that naging kumportable silang mga mamayan dahil sa proyekto nayan. hindi na kailangan lagyan pa natin ng kung ano anung anumalya para lang mapasama yung gobyerno o me proyekto nyan.

  11. Parang nilagyan mo ng scotch tape iyung lupa just in case lumindol or something, hindi bubuka ang lupa kasi may nag ho-hold nito together.
