COMELEC Denies Allegations that 100,000 Teachers are Still Unpaid

The Commission on Election (Comelec) explained and clarified the complains thrown against them by the Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT)-Philippines who claimed that 100,000 Teachers working as BEI’s have remained unpaid by the country’s poll body.

According to COMLEC Chairman Andres Bautista during a press briefing they have already paid about 410,0000 of the 476,000 teaches who served during the country’s national and local elections held on May 9, 2016.

Comelec clarified that around 66,000 and not 100,000 teachers who served as Board of Election Inspectors and support staff have yet to receive their honoraria. The Comelec chairman also noted that of the P1.74 billion they have allocated and deposited to the Land Bank of the Philippines, some P1.5 billion have already been encashed.

Comelec Chairman Andres Bautista also explained that the debit cards have been distributed to BEIs concerned and that is being done by the field officials, specifically the election officers. There are instances, however, that that distance is far away and it takes abid of time before the distribution is made.

For the May 2016 polls, the chairperson and members of the BEIs as well as support staff members were entitled to receive a per diem of P1,000 for three days; P500 each for the verification and sealing of the Book of Voters, for the final testing and sealing of the vote counting machines, and for transportation allowance; and P2,000 for undergoing training or a total  of P6,500.
