Five Filipino Scientists On The List Of Asia’s Top 100 Scientists

Five Filipino scientists were named in the “Asian Scientists 100” list by The Asian Scientist Magazine (ASM).

The list was released by ASM in order to raise awareness in the quality research all over the continent.

There are four Filipino members of the National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST), an attached agency of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST).

These four, who are also National Scientists, include Ramon Barba, Angel Alcala, Edgardo Gomez and Gavino Trono Jr.

The other Filipino scientist is Alfredo Mahar Francisco Lagmay. Lagmay was a member of the National research Council of the Philippines (NCRP), also an attached agency by DOST.

Ramon Barba led Filipino scientists by being in the third rank in the list.

Barba developed a technology to make the mango flowering to be allowed year-round, thus, making the production of mangoes all-year-round.

National Scientist (NS) Angel Alcala, 7th place, was honored for his research on the Philippine amphibians and reptiles.

According to Inquirer, NS Gomez, 9th place, led the world’s first-ever national-scale (–foul word(s) removed–)sment of damage to coral reefs.

NS Lagmay, 10th place, was recognized for leading the Project NOAH, the DOST’s program for disaster risk reduction and management.

While NS Trono Jr., 12th place, was lauded for his study on tropical marine phycology.

“The 100 distinguished scientists, innovators, and leaders on this annual list come from diverse fields, ranging from the biomedical sciences to mathematics and geology. Together, they weave a rich tapestry of science and technology and provide inspiration and hope to many people around the world,” said ASM as quoted in the article.

In the top 100 list, there were 33 from Japan, 26 from China, 15 from India, 10 from South Korea, six from Singapore, five from the Philippines, two each from Thailand and Vietnam, and one from Malaysia.
