Fil-Am Jordan Norwood Made History in Super Bowl with His 61-Yard Punt Return

Filipino-American Super Bowl player Jordan Norwood of the Denver Broncos made history in Super Bowl 50 with his impressive 61-yard punt return in the Broncos’ 24-10 win over the Carolina Panthers on Monday (Manila Time) as the Broncos won the much coveted NFL Super Bowl title.

Jordan Norwood is the younger brother of Gilas Pilipinas mainstay Gabe Norwood who played for the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA).

The younger Norwood, Jordan, set a Super Bowl record with 61-yard punt return and according to Yahoo Sports writer, Eric Edholm, “no one has returned a punt longer than 45 yards in the first 49 Super Bowls, which is considered as one of the world’s most popular sporting events.

According to Yahoo Sports’ Shutdown Corner reports “On his first return attempt of the game, Norwood caught Brad Nortman‘s punt at his own 25-yard line in traffic, and the Carolina Panthers stood around after as if he had called for a fair catch. Norwood didn’t, and he sidestepped two Panthers — Colin Jones and Teddy Williams — and turned up the right side of the field, sprung by a nice block from teammate Lerentee McCray on tight end Ed Dickson,” Edholm wrote.

The punt of the the Broncos wide receiver Jordan Norwood led to a field goal by Brandon McManus and a 13-7 lead for Denver who went on to win their Super Bowl’s third title since joining the National Football League (NFL).

Jordan Norwood’s achievement was also special because his brother Gabe Norwood was present at the Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California to witness the performance of the lone Filipino-American player featured in this year’s edition of the Super Bowl.
