Manila RTC Ordered Sulpicio Lines to Pay P241 Million for 2008 Sea Tragedy Victim

One of the country’s leading shipping company, Sulpicio Lines was ordered by the Manila Regional Trial Court to pay P241 million as compensation to the families of the MV Princess of the Stars tragedy during the year 2008.

The company Sulpicio Lines, now known as Philippine Span Asia Carrier Corporation, was ordered to indemnify 71 complainants who are heirs of the dead ship passengers in the amount of P241 million.

During the accident of the ill-fated ship, MV Princess of the Stars which capsized at the height of Typhoon Frank off the waters of Sibuyan Island in Romblon, at least 300 people lost their lives.

According to Manila RTC Branch 49 Presiding Judge Daniel Villanueva said the complainants proved negligence on the part of Sulpicio Lines.

The company and the Go family were ordered to pay P230,248,815.56 in damages, plus P11,512,440.78 in attorneys fees for a total of P241,761,256.34.

The MV Princess of the Stars incident is considered as one of the worst sea tragedies in the country.
