Filipino Internet Users are “Paying More for Less” Study Revealed

Filipino internet users in the Philippines are “paying more for less” according to the study conducted by LIRNEasia, a regional ICT (Information and Communications Technology) think tank policy that has been conducting quality of service testings since 2010.

According to Mary Grace Santos, research fellow of the LIRNEasia, presented the results of their study during the hearing of the Senate committee on trade on the impact of slow and expensive Internet in the country.

The ICT think tank LIRNEasia, they tested the basic data plans of the three major ISPs in the Philippines and if you can see here, from 2011, we actually saw deteriorating actual versus advertised speed from 2011 to 2014. The research revealed that the Philippines internet speed “lowest value for money” was offered in 2014.

The research also revealed that the actual speed of Internet connection in the country has never reached the advertised speed, which means that it was always 80% lower than the advertised speed while the speed performance actually declines for all ISP tested.

Aside from LIRNEasia research, presented during the hearing is the summary of the Akamai’s state of the Internet report conducted from 2011 to 2015, which showed that “nothing much has happened to the Philippines.
